The small print

Cookies on this site

The short version: this site stores one value in your browser, it records the choice you made in the banner, and nothing else is kept. The longer version is below for readers who want to know exactly what sits where.

The one value we store

When you answer the banner, the site writes a single entry into your browser's local storage saying which button you pressed. On your next visit the site reads that entry, sees that you have already answered, and keeps the banner out of your way.

It holds nothing else: no identifier, no reading history, no record of which guides you opened. If you decline, the only consequence is that the banner stops appearing; nothing on the site works differently.

What we do not use

There is no analytics on this site. No visitor counting service, no heat mapping, no session recording, no advertising network, no conversion pixel, no social media button that calls home. We are not measuring readers and we have nothing to sell to anyone who would want to.

There is also no embedded content from elsewhere: no video player, no font service loaded from another party, no map frame. Everything the page needs is served with the page, which is partly a privacy decision and partly because it loads faster on a slow connection.

Session cookies and the form

The contact form uses a short-lived technical measure to make sure a submission comes from the page it claims to come from. It is not used to recognise you, it carries no information about you, and it falls away when you close the browser.

Nothing you type into the form is stored in your browser. If you navigate away before sending, the text is gone.

Removing what is stored

Clearing site data for this address in your browser settings removes the banner value, after which the banner will ask once more. Browsing in a private window has the same effect, since nothing survives the window closing.

You can also block storage for this site entirely. The pages will still work; you will simply see the banner on every visit.

Hosting and server records

The hosting service keeps ordinary technical logs of requests, which exist for security and fault-finding and are not something we read in the normal course of things. Those are server records rather than cookies, and the privacy page describes them.

We do not place anything in your browser from our side beyond the single banner value described above.

Why the banner exists at all

Strictly speaking, a site that stores only a banner preference has little to ask permission for. We show the banner anyway because readers are used to being asked, and because it gives us a place to say plainly that nothing is being measured.

If that ever changed, the banner text would change with it and this page would be rewritten before any new value was stored.

Questions about any of this

If you want to know exactly what is in your browser for this site, open the storage panel in your browser's developer tools and look. There is one entry and the name of it is descriptive.

If something does not match what this page says, telephone or write through the contact page. We would want to know about it quickly.
