Terms of use

Reading this site is free and carries no obligation. These terms describe what the guides are, how far they go, and where your own judgement has to take over. They are written in plain English because that is the whole point of the site.

What you are reading

Quvxo is a set of notes written by private individuals about buying and keeping cars in South Africa. It is published for general reading. It is not professional advice, not a mechanical assessment of any particular car and not a financial recommendation of any kind.

No car brand or model is named anywhere in the text, on purpose. We write about categories of car, about processes and about costs. Where a photograph shows a badge, that is the photograph, not an endorsement.

Prices, figures and how quickly they age

Every rand figure on this site is indicative. Parts prices move with the exchange rate, labour rates differ between a franchise workshop in Menlyn and an independent in Pretoria West, fuel changes monthly and municipal fees change when they change. Treat our numbers as a sense of scale, then phone two suppliers for your own.

The same applies to service intervals and processes. Requirements at a registering authority can differ between provinces and even between offices. We describe the common Gauteng experience and tell you where to confirm it.

Decisions remain yours

If you buy a car after reading something here, that decision is yours. We cannot inspect a car through a photograph, we are not present when you negotiate, and we have no way of knowing what the seller told you. Nothing on this site transfers any part of the risk of a purchase from you to us.

Where a reader pays for one of the services listed on this site, the scope of that work is agreed in writing beforehand and our responsibility is limited to doing it properly. A walkaround is not a mechanical guarantee, and we say so on the services page as well as here.

Paid services, bookings and cancellations

Prices for paid help are published in rand and confirmed in writing before any work starts. Bookings are made by telephone or through the form. If you need to cancel, tell us as early as you can; where we have already paid an inspection facility on your behalf, that cost cannot be refunded to you.

We may decline work. The usual reasons are distance, a car outside what we know, or a situation where a reader clearly needs an attorney or a qualified assessor rather than us.

Using the text and photographs

The words on this site were written by the people who keep it. Quote a paragraph with a link back if it is useful to you, print the checklists for your own purchase, hand them to a friend. What we ask is that you do not republish whole guides as your own, and that you do not use them as sales material for cars you are selling.

The photographs are licensed for use on this site only and may not be lifted from it.

Links to other sites

Where a guide points at an outside resource, such as a government process or a testing facility, it does so because a reader asked where to go next. We have no control over those sites, no relationship with them and no responsibility for what they publish or how they treat your information.

We take no payment for any outbound reference, and we do not accept requests to add one.

Availability of the site

The site is a side project kept running by a few people. It may be offline for maintenance, during a hosting problem or when the person who handles it is away. We make no promise about availability and nothing here depends on the site being reachable at a particular moment.

If the site were ever to close, the guides would be released as a single printable document and announced on the home page first.

Law and language

These terms are read under South African law, and any dispute belongs in a South African court. The English text on this site is the only version; nothing here is published in translation.

If part of these terms were found to be unenforceable, the rest would continue to apply as written.
